MADRID -- Isolux Corsan has signed a contract with the Colombian company Bioenergy, 85 percent held by local oil company Ecopetrol SA, for the construction of an industrial complex under a turnkey contract, including a plant for the production of bioethanol from sugar cane, with a processing capacity of 2,100,000 tons of cane per year, a 40 MW co-generation plant using bagasse or sugar cane waste and other facilities for the milling, distillation and production of vinasse using the same raw material.
The industrial complex will be built in the Meta Department of Colombia, between the towns of Puerto Lopez and Puerto Gaitan, an area traditionally occupied by cattle ranches which is now converting to agricultural use, including sugar cane.
The contract has a total price tag of $140 million and project will begin immediately with the engineering work.
Isolux Corsan was awarded the contract and was selected from among the three participating companies. Nine firms were initially invited. This award in Colombia is the first biofuel project executed by Isolux Corsan outside Europe.
Isolux Corsan has extensive experience in the design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of biofuel plants. Among others, the company has executed biodiesel plant projects for are carried for Infinita Renovables in Ferrol (A Coruna) and in Castellon. Similarly, Isolux Corsan built a biofuel plant for Iniciativas Bioenergeticas in Calahorra (La Rioja) and for the Koipe vegetable oil factory in Andujar (Jaen).
