USDA: Corn use for ethanol production up in October

The USDA recently released its December Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report, announcing 470 million bushels of corn was consumed for fuel alcohol production in October, up 6 percent from September and up 3 percent from October 2016. Corn consumed for dry milling fuel production and wet milling fuel production was 89.1 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively.

The report also indicates that nearly 2.42 million hundredweight (cwt) (135,464 tons) of sorghum was consumed for fuel alcohol production in October, up from 2.39 million cwt in September, but down from 4.52 million cwt in October 2016.

At dry mills, condensed distillers solubles production reached 136,200 tons, up from 135,061 tons in September, but down from 145,853 tons in October of last year. Corn oil production reached 169,314 tons, up from 149,792 tons in September and 141,775 tons in October 2016. Distillers dried grains production was 449,199 tons, up from 454,220 tons in September and 448,355 tons the previous October. Distillers dried grains with solubles production reached 1.96 million tons, up from 1.85 million tons in September and 1.93 million tons in October 2016. Distillers wet grains production reached 1.34 million tons, up from 1.28 million tons in September and 1.29 million tons the previous October. Modified distillers wet grains production was 443,221 tons, up from 419,900 tons in September and 379,028 tons in the same month of last year.

At wet mills, corn germ meal production reached 90,646 tons, up from 85,798 tons in September and 58,988 tons in October 2016. Corn gluten feed production was 353,394 tons, up from 321,506 tons in September and 342,589 tons the previous October. Corn gluten meal production was 93,463 tons, up from 87,322 tons in September and 86,227 tons in October 2016. Wet corn gluten feed production reached 302,618 tons, up from 279,654 tons in September and 300,808 tons during the same month of last year.

At dry and wet mills, carbon dioxide captured reached 225,246 tons, up from 216,846 tons in September and 213,115 tons in October 2016.
