The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for May, reporting that nearly 1.67 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 22.23 million cellulosic RINs.

Nearly 22.07 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 84.48 million. Since the beginning of the year, approximately 5.03 million D3 RINs were generated for ethanol, with 55.71 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 23.74 million generated for renewable liquefied natural gas. More than 71.24 million D3 RINs have generated domestically, with 13.24 million generated by importers.

According to the EPA, 457,786 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 1.22 million. So far this year, 11,256 D7 RINs have been generated for cellulosic diesel, while 1.21 million have been generated for cellulosic heating oil. EPA data shows 11,256 D7 RINs have been generated domestically this year, while 1.21 million have been generated by importers.

More than 5.88 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 35.39 million. Since the beginning of the year, nearly 10.07 million D5 RINs have been generated for ethanol, with 14.63 million generated for naphtha, 1.64 million generated for heating oil, 9.34 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 531,163 generated for renewable compressed natural gas. According to the EPA, all of the D5 RINs generated so far this year have been generated domestically.

Nearly 1.3 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to 6.19 billion. Most, 6.08 billion, have been generated for ethanol, with 108.92 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. EPA data shows 6.08 billion D6 RINs have been generated domestically, with 4.89 million generated by importers and 108.92 million generated by foreign entities.

Nearly 342.81 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in May, bringing the net total for the first five months of the year to more than 1.43 billion. The majority, 1.12 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 323.1 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 1.17 million generated for renewable jet fuel. So far this year, nearly 1.2 billion D4 RINs have been generated domestically, with 98.4 million generated by importers and 149.5 million generated by foreign entities.

As of the end of May, the EPA estimates nearly 7.81 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 270.04 million retired, 281.81 million locked and available and 7.26 billion unlocked and available.
