UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced that mills in the south-central region of the country sold a record volume of ethanol during the first half of June. Production and sales were down significantly during the second half of May due to a truckers’ strike.

Mills in the south-central region processed 42.03 million tons of sugarcane during the first half of June, up 6.4 percent when compared to the same period of last year. Since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, mills in the region have processed 176.97 million tons of sugarcane, up from 151.71 million tons during the same period of last year.

During the first half of June 63.53 percent of processed cane went to ethanol production, up from 50.63 percent during the same period of last year. Since the beginning of the current harvest season, 64.98 percent of sugarcane has gone to ethanol production.

Hydrous ethanol production reached 1.44 billion liters (380.41 million gallons) during the first half of June, the second highest production on record, behind only the second half of August 2010, when production reached 1.5 billion liters.

Anhydrous ethanol production reached 700.58 million liters during the first half of June, nearly level with production from the same period of last year.

Of the total volume of ethanol produced during the two-week period, 20.11 million liters was made from corn. Since the beginning of the current season, corn ethanol production has reached 137.04 million liters, up 161 percent when compared to the same period of last year.

Units in the south-central region of Brazil sold 1.41 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of June, up 48.15 percent when compared to the same period of last year and setting a new record for ethanol sales. UNICA attributes the increase to the expansion of hydrous ethanol sales in the domestic market, which reached 907.07 million liters during the first half of June and also set a new record. When compared to last year, sales of hydrous ethanol were up 66.54 percent.

Domestic sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 503.79 million liters during the first half of June, up 23.57 percent when compared to the same period of last year.

Export sales of ethanol reached only 29.77 million liters during the first half of June, down 57.71 percent when compared to the same period of last year.
