USDA: Corn use for fuel ethanol down slightly in August

The USDA recently released the October edition of its Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report, noting corn use for fuel alcohol reached 479 million bushels in August, down slightly when compared to July and August 2017. Corn consumed in August for dry milling fuel production and wet milling fuel production was 91.2 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively.

Total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses reached 535 million bushels in August, down slightly from July, but up slightly from August. 2017. August 2018 usage included 91.6 percent for alcohol and 8.4 percent for other purposes. Corn consumed for beverage alcohol reached 2.56 million bushels, up 8 percent from July and up slightly from August 2017.

Sorghum consumed for fuel alcohol production fell to 3.46 million hundredweight (cwt) (193,480 tons), down from 3.5 million cwt in July and 3.75 million cwt in August of the previous year.

At dry mills, condensed distillers solubles production reached 134,308 tons, up from 127,335 tons in July and 133,909 tons in August 2017. Corn oil production reached 164,342 tons, down from 166,181 tons in July, but up from 160,316 tons in August 2017. Distillers dried grains production reached 394,908 tons, up from 390,080 tons in August, but down from 471,705 tons in August of the previous year. Distillers dried grains with solubles production reached 2.16 million tons, up from 2.11 million tons in July, and 2.06 million tons in August 2017. Distillers wet grains production fell to 1.31 million tons, down from 1.33 million tons in July and 1.35 million tons in August 2017. Modified distillers grains production fell to 401,358 tons, down from 420,940 tons in July and 431,072 tons in August of the previous year.

At wet mills, corn germ meal production fell to 55,012 tons, down from 60,800 tons in July and 90,005 tons in August 2017. Corn gluten feed production reached 325,547 tons, up from 321,447 tons in July, but down from 345,196 tons in August of the previous year. Corn gluten meal production fell to 91,947 tons, down from 93,113 tons in July and 92,823 tons in August 2017. Wet corn gluten feed production fell to 256,268 tons, down from 263,139 tons in August and 313,340 tons in August 2017.

At dry and wet mills, carbon dioxide captured reached 282,872 tons, up from 260,461 tons in July and 227,696 tons in August 2017.
