A regenerative thermal oxidizer installed at Otter Tail Ag Enterprises LLC in Fergus Falls, Minn., showed excellent performance in preliminary tests conducted by a third party, according to the RTO designer, Pro-Environmental Inc. Commissioned in April, the three-canister RTO downstream from the rotary dryer showed nitrous oxide emissions in preliminary testing that amounted to 20 percent of permit levels and volatile organic compound emissions at almost zero. The air pollution control still has to undergo formal testing by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

California-based Pro-Environmental designed, fabricated and supervised the installation, startup and diagnostic testing of the unit. The company provides a range of air pollution control technologies. Otter Tail Ag Enterprises began operations at the new 55 MMgy ethanol plant in March.
