Irish Magazine Business and Finance has named Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Alltech, one of the most influential U.S.-Irish business leaders of 2008.

In 1980, in Lexington, Ky., Lyons founded Alltech, one of the original—if not the original—technology and product suppliers to the ethanol industry. Although the company focuses on improving animal performance, enhancing existent natural processes of growth, digestion and reproduction by providing yeast-based natural nutritional ingredients, it also continues to support the ethanol industry, especially in the distillers grains area.

Lyons is regarded as an enterprising entrepreneur, salesman, marketer and scientist, and is widely considered in the agri-business sector as an innovator and industry leader.

A native of Dundalk, Co Louth, Ireland, Lyons is credited with building Alltech into a €300 million ($467 million) in just over 25 years. The company's global headquarters is in Lexington, Ky., but it also has a cutting-edge European Bioscience Center in Dunboyne, Co Meath, Ireland, in addition to a presence in 113 countries worldwide. So far this year, Alltech has expanded offices in North America and a regional office in New Zealand.

Lyons has authored more than 20 books and many research papers for scientific journals. He has recently been awarded honorary doctorates from University College Dublin, the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom and Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, for his contributions to science.
