Denmark inaugurates straw-to-ethanol demo plant

By | January 04, 2010
Prince Joachim of Denmark recently inaugurated one of the world's first cellulosic ethanol plants in Kalundborg, Denmark. The 60 MMgy plant, built by Inbicon, a DONG Energy technology company, will primarily use straw as a feedstock and will also produce lignin pellets and C5 molasses. The pellets can be used as fuel at combined heat and power plants, and the C5 molasses can be used for animal feed and other purposes. During the recent Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, limousines powered by the straw-based ethanol were used to ferry attendees to and from the event.
