Japan inaugurates cellulosic demo plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Co. Ltd. and Kansai Chemical Engineering Co. Ltd. have partnered to build a cellulosic ethanol demonstration plant, located at the Futami Plant of MHI's Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The plant will produce ethanol for auto fuel from soft cellulose vegetation such as rice and wheat straw. Construction of the plant began in April and an inauguration was held Nov. 29. The plant is Japan's first ethanol production facility capable of continuous preprocessing.
