ScottMadden Inc. and Ascendant Partners Inc. have joined forces to help renewable energy companies secure project finance. Renewable energy and clean tech companies have found it increasingly difficult to obtain project financing in today's environment, especially if overarching technology or market risks are associated with their project. Given these circumstances along with the Administration's priority of increasing renewable energy production, the Department of Energy (DOE) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have put in place attractive loan guarantee and grant programs designed to bridge the gap for developers interested in securing funding to move their projects forward.

However, these programs can be costly, time consuming and complex to navigate. Competition for stimulus money has been fierce, with many entities chasing limited dollars. Since the application processes can be complicated and difficult to complete, skill in addressing all application requirements has been a key differentiator for DOE reviewers in determining whether to approve or reject applications.

ScottMadden and Ascendant Partners provide the experience and qualifications needed to assist in successfully preparing DOE and USDA Loan Guarantee and Grant Applications for renewable energy projects. By combining ScottMadden's energy and clean tech expertise with Ascendant Partners' experience in renewable energy project finance, the partnership creates a winning combination to assist companies in successfully completing loan guarantee and grant applications as well as helping them oversee the project management responsibilities required once funding is secured.

Both firms have worked on numerous DOE and USDA loan guarantee applications, advanced energy tax credits and other production and investment tax credit applications. In addition to their application experience, they are certified loan application reviewers for the DOE. "From our time spent developing and reviewing applications to managing government projects, we know what good' is in the eyes of the DOE and USDA," said Jake Jacobi, Partner & Sustainability Practice Lead of ScottMadden. The firms have developed detailed methodologies, templates and work plans for each of the DOE and USDA funding mechanisms, which eliminates the guesswork and errors while significantly improving the efficiency of the process. "By combining our industry, management consulting, and investment banking expertise, our firms have the ability to hit the ground running and quickly adapt to a company's situation. Additionally, we can help our clients quickly assess whether these funding paths will work for them," said Mark Warren, partner of Ascendant Partners, Inc.
