In a follow up to last week’s blog post, Alberta, Canada’s Provincial Energy Strategy was announced Dec. 11. Read more about it here: http://www.ethanolproducer.com/article.jsp?article_id=5180.
The key part of the plan is Alberta’s adoption of a renewable fuels standard, which will require 5 percent ethanol in gasoline and 2 percent renewable fuel in diesel fuel. It’s schedule to take effect in 2010. The plan is similar to a federal standard that is in the process of implementation.
There has been some talk about a threat to Bill C-33, which will require the use of 5 percent renewable content nationwide by 2010. The Canadian Senate signed the bill on June 26, and it was signed by Government General Michaëlle Jean. Would another election put less ethanol-friendly government leaders in office? Does the fourth province passing its own RFS mean that doesn’t matter as much?
I’d like to hear from our Canadian readers. What’s your take on the happenings in Canadian government? What impact might it have (or not have) on the country’s renewable fuels industries and push to meet climate change requirements?
